Puppy progress 3

Shona is still a very attentive Mum, but is now choosing to sleep in her bed in the kitchen instead of in the whelping box, and this morning I was greeted by two pups wandering round the kitchen with her. The pups have now started on Skinner’s puppy food, and their eagerness to eat makes this a somewhat messy affair, although I’ve found that feeding them from a deep 12-hole muffin tin means that they can only get their noses and paws into their food, so at least they don’t end up plastered with dinner.

They are very playful, trying to chew each other and wagging their tails, and all come running when I step into the whelping box, which has made taking individual photos of them somewhat tricky this week. I enjoy sitting in the box with them while they clamber all over me, and they often fall asleep in a heap on my lap, which gives me a good excuse to sit down for a while. I am handling each pup individually every day to get them used to being away from their siblings, so that it won’t be a total shock to them when they go to their new homes at eight weeks old.

The puppies are now registered with the Kennel Club, and they are all named after Scottish islands.
